Russian tennis player Liudmila Samsonova was defeated in straight sets by Austria’s Anastasia Potapova in the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome.

The match, which lasted 1 hour and 27 minutes, ended with a score of 3:6, 2:6 in favor of Potapova, who entered the tournament as the 38th seed. Samsonova, seeded 20th, could not find her rhythm against her opponent.
Potapova, 25, will now face American Jessica Pegula in the next round. She changed her sporting citizenship from Russia to Austria in 2026. Samsonova, 27, is currently ranked 21st in the world.
The Rome tournament, boasting a prize fund of over $8.3 million, will conclude on May 17. The defending champion is Italy’s Jasmine Paolini. This event is classified as a WTA 1000, making it one of the most prestigious tournaments outside the Grand Slams and the WTA Finals.
