The 2025-2026 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) playoffs quarterfinals kicked off on May 6, with the Beijing Ducks securing a vital home victory over the Guangdong Southern Tigers, winning 102-94 at the Wukesong Arena in Beijing. This win gives Beijing a crucial lead in the best-of-three series, which has been shortened this season from a best-of-five format, adding intensity and unpredictability to the matchups.
Both teams have a storied rivalry, and this season’s regular season saw Beijing sweep both encounters against Guangdong, finishing fourth in the standings. Guangdong, ranked fifth, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating the Guangzhou Loong Lions 2-1 in the opening round.
The game started tightly, with Guangdong’s foreign players Qin and McCullough scoring consistently, while Beijing’s Zhou Qi and Jamalri answered back, tying the score at 13 halfway through the first quarter. A late surge led by Hu Mingxuan, Salinje, and Xu Jie helped Guangdong close the first quarter ahead 29-25.
In the second quarter, Beijing’s Zhao Rui, Jamalri, and Mike sparked a 12-0 run to take the lead. Xu Jie responded with a crucial three-pointer, and combined with McCullough and Qin, Guangdong tied the game at 49 by halftime.
After the break, Guangdong capitalized on Beijing’s turnovers to regain the lead. However, Beijing’s Zeng Fanbo and Williamms ignited a three-point barrage, pushing the lead to 12 points. In the final quarter, Guangdong fought back, but Beijing maintained their advantage, eventually sealing the win 102-94, completing a season sweep over Guangdong.
Zeng Fanbo led all scorers with 23 points, while Jamalri added 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 8 assists. For Guangdong, Qin and McCullough each scored 17 points, and Salinje contributed 16 points.
Beijing’s head coach Xu Limin praised his team’s preparation and resilience, noting that they stuck to their game plan even when trailing. “That was the key to victory,” he said, highlighting the team’s solid defense and rebounding, which led to “great team basketball.”
The series continues with Game 2 on May 9, hosted by Guangdong in their home arena.
