As a young boy, Suzuki dreamt of attending a top-tier high school known for its football program, only to have his admission deferred not once, but twice. In an exclusive series of interviews with the mentors of Japan’s national team players ahead of the North and Central America World Cup, Suzuki’s former high school coach at Funabashi Municipal High School, Ryuzo Asaoka, revealed the grit behind the player’s rise. “He simply refused to be defeated by those two deferrals,” Asaoka said. “He kept working harder, and eventually earned his place among the best.”
